Transitional Craftsman Home Plan
House Plan 74016 presents us with a transitional design, meaning that this contemporary plan reveals subtle old fashioned elements. Notice craftsman style in its square column bases, each featuring a decorative relief. Shingle siding is highlighted with fish scale accents. Dentil trim that you see over the upper level window was often used for ornamentation in historic homes from the Federalist Period. The designer intended to convey a nautical theme with the heavy timber porch and glass railing. As you can see in the photo of a completed house, the new owners decided to leave out the modern elements and reemphasize the arts and crafts style with stone veneer, stone column bases and wrought iron pickets for the deck. Remember, the final appearance is up to you!
With two bedrooms, two bathrooms and 1923 square feet of living space, this design may work well for a retired couple. The downstairs guest suite is sectioned off from the main living space and includes a sitting room that opens to the back screened porch through a set of French doors. Enter the guest bedroom through a pocket door, and the full bathroom is across the hall. You can only enter the bathroom if the main door to the suite is open. A young couple might appreciate this design because they could rent out the private room downstairs.
Throughout the interior we see wood floors, exposed truss timber framing and twisted wrought iron balusters on the staircase (though the plans call for glass railing as seen on the outside elevation). The upstairs landing is a loft with a view into the foyer. To the right, step across the bridge into the library which is bordered with railings and appears to be floating on exposed floor beams over the living / dining room. A huge set of windows brings natural light to the library and reaches much of the lower level.
The master suite dominates the rest of the upper level with a ten foot ceiling and french doors providing access to the sundeck. Fire safety is achieved with an outdoor staircase. Washer and dryer hookups are included in the walk in closet along with plenty of storage space. A pocket door to the master bathroom allows guests to enter if they were upstairs perusing the library.
