His story is shared by his daughter Sydney (Barns) Shepherd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-with-blue-prints.jpeg?fit=669%2C502&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-with-blue-prints.jpeg 1440w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-with-blue-prints-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-with-blue-prints-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sydney wrote the following on May 15, 2020:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is interesting that something as awful as a world-wide pandemic can inspire one to stop and count their blessings.\u00a0I have wanted to share the story of my parents\u2019 home with your company for several years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I left my home in Kansas City in mid-March to work remotely and shelter in place with my dad. Because of these two opportunities that were products of the Covid19 pandemic, I am finally getting that done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When my dad, Harrison Foster Barns, was released from active duty with the US Army after World War II, he returned to Dodge City, Kansas, to live with my mother in her parents\u2019 house in a basement apartment.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My dad was employed by Scheufler Supply Company in Dodge City, which is where he worked during high school and junior college before leaving for the service.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within a few years, he and my mother bought a double lot on the north end of town, just inside the city limits, which was to be the site of their future home. There was no development beyond that point, just prairie.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My dad bought a building that was one of the barracks at the Air Base on the west side of Dodge City. He disassembled the building and moved the wood to his property at 1915 6<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He bought the blue prints for Plan No. 6625 from Garlinghouse Plan Service in Topeka Kansas and began to build the home he still lives in today.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2016\" height=\"1512\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Garling-House-identifier.jpeg?fit=669%2C502&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Garling-House-identifier.jpeg 2016w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Garling-House-identifier-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Garling-House-identifier-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Garling-House-identifier-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2016px) 100vw, 2016px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He hired someone to dig the basement and foundation and build the roof. With the help of friends and family, he built the entire house.\u00a0He did this after he left work at 5 PM and on weekends.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foundation is made of solid concrete blocks that my dad and uncle made, one at a time with an electric cement mixer and block maker. The blocks are so hard that they have provided a rock-solid foundation that never has leaked and defies drilling by utility workers.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My mother painted the interior and did the decorating, and in the fall of 1950, my parents hosted the wedding reception for my mother\u2019s sister and her husband in their new home.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not even two years old when they moved in, so this is the place I will always consider &#8220;home.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2016\" height=\"1512\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-and-me-5.jpeg?fit=669%2C502&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-and-me-5.jpeg 2016w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-and-me-5-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-and-me-5-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.familyhomeplans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Daddy-and-me-5-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2016px) 100vw, 2016px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought you would like to know that the design of this Garlinghouse home plan has made it possible for my dad to live comfortably by himself with very little assistance all these years.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He will celebrate his 99<sup>th<\/sup> birthday on August 19<sup>th<\/sup>. He says he is going for 100.\u00a0 He is a man of his word, so I believe he certainly will.
