It has finally come true. That perfect home\nfor your family is a reality after months of dreaming and scheming, looking at\npictures and poring over floor plans. You chose the ideal plan, picked the\ncolors, materials, fabrics and furnishings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About the Yard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first impression neighbors and visitors\nwill have won\u2019t be the marble floor in the entry or the Persian rug in the\nliving room. It\u2019ll be the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attractive landscaping, including the right\ngrass type and plants, is the finishing touch for a beautiful home. This takes\nas much thought and planning as your house did. The good news is, you can take\nmore time in the planning and execution of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The key things to think about in planning\nlandscaping are what you want, what will work, and what you can afford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In considering what you want, think both\npresent and future. If you have small children now, they need a shady place to\nplay in the summer. But if later you\u2019d like to put a pool in that spot, you\ndon\u2019t want a maple tree growing where the deep end will be. And there\u2019s no\nsense in planting shrubs where you intend to install a deck or outdoor kitchen\nin a couple of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Return on Investment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Be realistic about what will work. What will grow well \u2014 whether turf, plants, or trees \u2014 depends on climate and soil. Choose plants that will survive and thrive where you live. Native plants are becoming the \u201cin\u201d thing, as they are low maintenance and require less water. Water consumption<\/a><\/strong> is an important factor in choosing plants. You don\u2019t want your yard to shrivel up in times of drought and possible water restrictions. An irrigation system might be a good idea. But you also don\u2019t want a water bill that will put you under water!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to what you can afford, think of landscaping as an investment. The American Society of Landscape Architects says 5% to 10% of a home’s value should be spent on landscaping. For a $200,000 home, that can be up to $20,000! That\u2019s a chunk of change \u2014 but also consider that good landscaping<\/a><\/strong> <\/a>can increase the value of your home by 15 percent<\/a><\/strong> <\/a>or more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike your house, you can build up your\nlandscape over time \u2013 months or even years. You can do the whole thing\nyourself, hire pros to do a turnkey job, or do a combination of both. DIY will\nbe the least expensive, but hiring a landscape architect can at least put you\non the right path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think Year-Round <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Warm months come to mind when we consider\nlandscaping, but your home will be on display all year. What will provide life\nand color even when the season changes? Sugar maples bring gold to autumn, and\nred maples are eye-popping. Evergreen shrubs keep the yard from looking drab.\nWhen you choose plants, stagger the blooming times so can keep color as long as\npossible through the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pay Attention to the Edges<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A subtle detail that makes a world of difference in a home\u2019s appearance is the edges.\u00a0 The borders created by flower beds, walkways, landscape installations and curbs should all be maintained regularly.\u00a0 Use a weed eater with heavy line<\/a><\/strong> at least once a month to maintain the edges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be Realistic About What You Can\nHandle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sure, you want a magazine-cover landscape, but\ndo you have the time to maintain it? Kids and jobs are the top priorities \u2014 and\ntime-consuming. You don\u2019t want your landscaping dreams to literally die on the\nvine because you bit off too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep Resale in Mind<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yes, good landscaping increases value, but an\noverly ambitious scheme can be a turnoff to a potential buyer who doesn\u2019t want\nto devote the same time and resources to a yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Done right, creating lovely landscaping for\nyour home can be a point of pride, enhancement of value \u2014 and the pursuit of\npleasure for years to come!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
