Updated Craftsman House Plans
Craftsman style home design comes from the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th Century. We love those big front porches, elephant leg columns, stone and brick exteriors and exposed rafter tails. An authentic Craftsman home would be considered small by today’s standards and maybe have a little too much ornamentation for a modern neighborhood. These three plans are designed with a traditional template and borrow some of those artsy details that were popular in the 1920’s.
Updated Craftsman House Plan 66567 exhibits a mixture of building materials on the exterior: standing seam metal accent roof over the front porch, square tapered columns on stone bases, stone veneer, board and batten siding and cedar shake siding on the gable ends. Arched upper floor windows add transitional character, breaking away from the rows of square windows typically seen on Craftsman homes. The homeowner has chosen the more authentic casement windows over the traditional variety shown on the elevation. Instead of presenting a front facing garage for the street view, this properly allowed for the plans to be modified with a side entry. Storybook cottage board and batten shutters have been replaced with black shutters in a simple,
elegant style.
Inside, we find 3124 square feet of very traditional style living space- ceiling moldings and baseboards are what you would find in a standard home. However, you always have the option to finish the interior with exposed ceiling beams and craftsman style moldings if that is what you prefer. The kitchen has a good start with contrasting colors in the wooden cabinets, marble counter tops and iron pendant light fixtures. Around the whirlpool tub in the master bath is beautiful tile work, double vanities and a stained glass window. Natural light floods the family room with two levels of windows, and the stone fireplace stretches to the ceiling.
House Plan 97940 has 2218 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Again, from the street view we see a metal accent roof,
stone and wood siding. Entering from the front facing garage puts you in the mud room / laundry which is conveniently located right outside the large master bedroom. In addition to the great room, the family may also gather in the den or morning room outside the kitchen. Three smaller bedrooms are located upstairs where the kids share a computer loft and full bathroom. Details to enjoy include the window seat on the stair landing and the two story ceiling in the great room.
House Plan 68203 is the smallest in this collection with 1774 square feet, 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Understated Craftsman elements include the metal accent roof, use of brick, multi paned windows and cedar shake siding on the prominent gable. From the master bed, look up at a tray ceiling or walk into the bathroom where you find double sinks, tub, shower, private toilet and huge walk in closet. The great room features a corner fireplace, and the breakfast room has a cathedral ceiling. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are upstairs, giving the parents plenty of privacy.
